Quick Reference

A methyl-lysine binding protein (heterochromatin protein 1, chromobox homologue-5, 191 aa) localized at heterochromatin sites, where it mediates gene silencing. It binds to methylated histone H3 (methylated at lysine 9) through a single chromodomain and will also homodimerize. HP1-α, -β, and -γ are released from chromatin during the M phase of the cell cycle. More recently it has been shown to participate in euchromatin gene silencing in association with DNA methyltransferases.
