The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, a self-regulating system, based on negative feedback, in which hormones are released from the hypothalamus, stimulating the release of a different class of hormones from the pituitary gland, which in turn stimulate secretions of a third class of hormones from the adrenal glands and the testes, or ovaries, the whole cycle playing an important role in the regulation of hunger, thirst, sleep, mood, sexual activity, learning, and memory.
