Chinese statesman; President (2003– ). He joined the Chinese Communist Party in 1965 and served in the provinces of Guizhou and Tibet before becoming a member of the Politburo in 1992. He replaced Jiang Zemin as General Secretary of the Communist Party in 2002, as President of China in 2003, and as Chairman of the Central Military Commission in 2004.
