Is the label given to the managerial specialism in the area of human resource management. Members of the HR function within organizations are increasingly described as human resource managers though other titles, such as personnel manager, employee relations and industrial relations manager are also used. It is common for large multi-site organizations to have a dedicated HR function, responsible for developing HR policy and administering HR systems. Supporting line managers in the management of staff is also an important aspect of the function's activity. The standing and importance of the HR function within businesses can vary widely (see HR roles). In some cases, HR is represented on the main board and acts as a strategic partner to other members of the senior management team. In other cases, in contrast, it is a marginal function, confined largely to operational matters. The trend in Britain is for members of the HR function to be professionally qualified and many HR specialists are members of the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development.
