Mufti of Jerusalem, president of the Supreme Muslim Council of Palestine, and Arab nationalist leader during British rule in Palestine (1917–48). Participated in violent anti-Zionist protests in Jerusalem in 1920. Sought British and Muslim support for a national government in Palestine with an Arab majority. Supported violent Palestinian revolt against the British (1936–39) after the proposed partition of Palestine between Arabs and Jews. Sought Hitler's support for Arab independence. Exiled after World War II.
