Before the days of modern communications, the title given to an agent appointed by deed, executed by all the owners of freight carried on board. This gave him the power to advance and lend money, to make all necessary payments in regard to the freight carried, and to receive all money obtained from the sale of any freight, being accountable to the owners for all his transactions.
