religious writer. He trained for the Unitarian ministry but became a member of the C of E. In 1861 he was offered the joint-editorship and proprietorship of the Spectator, which he used as a pulpit from which to challenge, on Christian principles, the regnant agnosticism of J. S. Mill and T. H. Huxley.
