A family of aquatic, monocotyledonous (Monocotyledon) herbs that have regular, usually dioecious flowers within spathes, usually with 3 sepals and 3 petals, 1–3 or more stamens, and an inferior 1-celled ovary. The family includes Hydrocharis (frog-bit) and Elodea. In modern classifications there are 16 genera, with about 70 species. They are mostly tropical but also found in the temperate zone.
