Overview

hydrogenosome

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

Organelles that resemble mitochondria, but generally lack genomic DNA. They generate hydrogen and ATP and are found in various unrelated protoctists, such as anaerobic ciliates and flagellates. However, one ciliate (Nyctotherus ovalis), living in the hindgut of cockroaches, has a rudimentary genome which encodes components of the mitochondrial electron transport chain. This finding supports the idea that most hydrogenosomes have evolved from mitochondria. See adenosine phosphate.
