British dancer, choreographer, and ballet director. He studied with Rambert and danced with Ballet Rambert (1949–52) before moving to Sadler's Wells (later Royal Ballet, 1952–70). Although never a top-rank classical dancer he was a highly versatile performer and after being appointed soloist in 1954 created roles in many ballets, including Cranko's Prince of the Pagodas (1957) and Antigone (1960), and danced with Margot Fonteyn's World Tour (1963). He choreographed his first work in 1968, Stravinsky's Le Baiser de la fée for Dutch National Ballet (revived London Festival Ballet, 1974) and from 1970 to 1973 and 1984 to 1986 was ballet director for the Bavarian State Opera Ballet, Munich. Otherwise he worked as a freelance choreographer with LFB (later English National Ballet) for various seasons between 1970 and 1993 as well as for Houston Ballet and others. A fluent choreographer with a light, popular touch, his ballets sprang from a wide range of score and subjects, and include Dvořák Variations (mus Dvořák, LFB, 1970), Charlotte Brontë (mus. Young, Royal Ballet New Group, 1974), The Merry Widow (mus. Lehár, arr. Lanchbery, Australian Ballet, 1975), The Sanguine Fan (mus. Elgar) and The Nutcracker (mus. Tchaikovsky; both for LFB, 1976), Rosalinda (mus. J. Strauss, PACT Ballet, 1978, rev. LFB, 1979), Papillon (mus. Offenbach, Houston Ballet, 1979, rev. Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet, 1980), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (mus. Berlioz, arr. Lanchbery, Houston Ballet, 1988), Les Liaisons amoureuses (mus. Offenbach, arr. Davis, Northern Ballet Theatre, 1989), and The Sleeping Beauty (mus. Tchaikovsky, ENB, 1993). He married the former dancer Annette Page.
