Pressure significantly elevated above the normal prevailing level. The term is applied particularly to high atmospheric oxygen pressure, as used to treat conditions in which oxygen uptake by the lungs is impeded, e.g., carbon monoxide poisoning; and to high air pressure, used to prevent and treat decompression syndrome.
