A naturally occurring purine derivative (6-hydroxypurine), a spontaneous deamination product of adenine that can also be formed by oxidation of xanthine by xanthine oxidase. Hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (HGPRT) converts hypoxanthine into inosine monophosphate.
