Leader of a revolt against the governor of Iraq and Persia, al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf, in 700–03. Discontented troops mutinied at the prospect of a distant campaign and, gathering various supporters, revolted in 700–3. Prominent sentiments of the rebellion were the discontent of Kufan notables with the new social order and religious complaints of the Quran reciters.
