An Egyptian physician and scholar who rose from humble origins to become chief physician of Egypt and the guardian of public health, emphasizing the importance of hygiene and a clean domestic and urban environment. He was among the Arab scholars who helped to preserve and transmit to Renaissance Europe the writings of Hippocrates of Cos and Galen.
