The psychedelic drug α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-isoxazole-acetic acid, found in the fly agaric mushroom Amanita muscaria, a potent excitatory amino acid antagonist (3) that causes initial drowsiness, depression of motor activity, and ataxia, followed by hyperactivity and excitability accompanied by changes in perceptions and emotions and delirium. It is also used as a neurotoxin to destroy neuron cell bodies while leaving nerve fibres intact in the area where it is applied. See also hallucinogen.
