(Mozart: Idomeneo). Sop./mez. (travesti role) (or ten.). Son of Idomeneo. Loved by two women, Elettra and the captured Ilia. When the father he thinks is dead arrives on the shore, Idamante cannot understand why he pushes him away, not knowing that Idomeneo has promised Neptune, in return for saving his life at sea, to sacrifice the first person he sees on arriving in Crete. His father's attempts to save him arouse Neptune's wrath but this is appeased by Ilia's offer to be sacrificed in his place. Neptune agrees to waive his demand if Idomeneo abdicates the throne in favour of Idamante. Aria: Non temer (‘Do not fear’). This was the only role in which Luciano Pavarotti appeared at Glyndebourne (1964). Created (1781) by the castrato Vincenzo dal (or del) Prato.
