Of or relating to the study of individuals or anything unique, especially approaches to the study of personality that deny the possibility of general laws or traits and stress the uniqueness of individuals. Not to be confused with ideographic. The term was coined in 1904 by the German philosopher Wilhelm Windelband (1848–1915). Compare nomothetic.
