Quick Reference

(Mozart: Idomeneo). Sop. Daughter of the Trojan King Priam, sent to Crete by Idomeneo. She falls in love with his son, Idamante, and offers herself in his place as a sacrifice demanded by Neptune. Moved by this action, Neptune relents and Idomeneo abdicates in favour of Idamante and Ilia. Aria: Zeffiretti lusinghieri (‘Gentle breezes’). A delightful role in which sopranos of the calibre of Sylvia McNair, Rebecca Evans, and Melanie Diener have made an impression. Created (1781) by Dorothea Wendling.

Subjects: Opera.
