imagery relaxation

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

A relaxation procedure that involves athletes imagining themselves in some environment or place where they always feel relaxed and comfortable. For example, Jackie Stewart, ex-world champion formula 1 racing driver, used to sit in his car moments before a race and imagine his body inflating like a balloon. Then he would let the air out and feel himself relax. This, he contended, helped him prepare physically and mentally for a race. Imagery relaxation is often part of flotation therapy. It is a form of somatic stress management.
