1 The representation of an object that is produced when electromagnetic radiation passes through it or is reflected from it. Visible images are formed when light impinges on the retina, and various forms of images are produced by photography, microscopes, electron microscopes, x-rays, etc., and can be viewed, e.g., on fluoroscopic screens or suitable radiosensitive film.

2 The perception of personal characteristics by the self and by others, which may be similar or different. See also body image.
