Heterocyclic compound derived from imidazole. Imidazoline receptors are thought to play a role in hypertension, pancreatic function, cell proliferation, regulation of body fat, neuroprotection, inflammation, and some psychiatric disorders, such as depression. There appear to be several types of imidazoline receptors: the I1 type has a high affinity for clonidine and agmatine and the I2 type has a high affinity for idazoxan. The receptors have proved difficult to identify and there remains some controversy.
