(1914–44), SOE operative who, under the codename MADELEINE, worked for the organization's CINÉMA network in Paris from mid-1943. Half-Indian, half-American, she was born in the Kremlin and was living in Paris when war broke out. She went to the UK and served as a WAAF wireless operator before receiving a commission and joining SOE. She was betrayed in September 1943 and after spending nearly a year in prison in chains she was sent to Dachau and shot. She was posthumously awarded the George Cross (see decorations).
