Index Expurgatorium a list of passages to be deleted from a book before it was considered fit for reading by Roman Catholics; a list of authors considered fit to read only after the removal of objectionable matter from their works, later included in the Index Librorum Prohibitorum.

Index Librorum Prohibitorum an official list of books which Roman Catholics were forbidden to read or which were to be read only in expurgated editions, as contrary to Catholic faith or morals. The first Index was issued in 1557; it was revised at intervals until abolished in 1966.
