The bibliographic search and retrieval system maintained by the National Library of Medicine that has recorded titles and authors of original articles and names of a very large number of serial journals of biomedical sciences, in English and other languages, since 1879, when it was established as the National Library of Medicine's “Index Catalogue” by the physician, public health pioneer, and librarian John Shaw Billings (1838–1913). For many years, the Index Medicus was published in monthly, quarterly, and annual volumes. Now it can be searched online at http://www.nlm.nih.gov (the Web site of the National Library of Medicine).
