A border conflict between India and Pakistan following an attempt by Pakistan to assist Muslim opponents of Indian rule in Kashmir. Fighting spread to the Punjab, but a UN ceasefire was accepted and by the Tashkent Declaration of 11 January 1966, a troop withdrawal was agreed. A renewal of frontier fighting occurred in 1971, at a time when Bangladesh was seeking independence from Pakistan.
