Quick Reference

A regulatory system in which the product of a regulator gene (the repressor) is active and blocks transcription of the operon. The effector (called an inducer) inactivates the repressor and therefore allows mRNA synthesis to occur. Thus, transcription occurs only in the presence of effector molecules. See regulator gene. Compare with repressible system.
