Polypeptide hormone of the TGFβ family, produced by the granulosa cells of the ovary or Sertoli cells of testis, that suppress pituitary FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) secretion. There are two forms, αβA and αβB, the β subunit being shared with activin which counters the effects of inhibin. Inhibin is reportedly a tumour suppressor for testicular stromal cell tumours, the key gene being that for inhibin-α.
