(1754–98) Revolutionary army officer, born in Caroline County, Virginia. Innes fought in numerous actions, including the battle of Germantown (1777), and led militia forces against the invasion of Virginia by the British in 1781. Although Innes was in ill health by the mid 1790s, George Washington continued to call upon him to carry out special duties of national importance.
