Arabic bidah. Any modification of accepted religious belief or practice. Based on the hadith “Any manner or way which someone invents in this religion such that that manner or way is not part of this religion is to be rejected,” the term has a negative connotation in Islam. Conservatives extend the prohibition beyond strictly religious matters to social practice, while more liberal thinkers condemn only innovations judged to substantially alter the core of Islamic teaching.
