A professional body for teachers in higher education. It was founded in 1998 with the aim of supporting standards of practice in universities and other higher education institutions. Teachers can join the Institute at one of two levels: full members must be academics with a minimum of five years' teaching experience or completion of an ILT‐accredited programme of professional development; while associate members must have completed at least one year's teaching and an ILT‐accredited programme of professional development. The latter may take the form of, for example, a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PHE) or similar professional development qualification.
