instrument transfer

Quick Reference

The process of passing an instrument between operator and assistant. During parallel instrument transfer, the instrument being received by the assistant is hooked around the little finger and the instrument to be delivered is held between the thumb and first two fingers such that, at the point of exchange, both instruments are parallel to each other. Instruments are transferred with their working ends pointing in the direction of use and, for safety reasons, in the area around the sides and to the front of and below the patient's mouth (transfer zone).
