integral protein

An amphipathic (q.v.) protein that is firmly embedded in the plasma membrane. Integral proteins interact with both the hydrophobic (q.v.) and the hydrophilic (q.v.) components of the phospholipid bilayer and are difficult to isolate. Compare with peripheral protein.
