An enzyme that catalyzes a site-specific recombination (q.v.) by which a prophage becomes integrated into or excised (deintegrated) from a bacterial chromosome; an excisionase enzyme is also required for the excision process. See lambda (λ) bacteriophage. The term also refers to a family of site-specific recombinases. See site-specific recombinase.
