In 1851 the Colonial (later Commonwealth) and Continental Church Society (CCCS) was formed by the union of two existing bodies, to enable Evangelicals in the C of E to take an active part in the work of Church extension in the British Empire; it later provided chaplains in Continental Europe. In 1979 it became the Intercontinental Church Society.
