(IL-23)

A heterodimeric cytokine composed of one IL-12 subunit (p40) and a different subunit, p19 (189 aa). It is pro-inflammatory, involved in the recruitment of inflammatory cells in Th1-mediated diseases, and may play a role in immune-mediated demyelination of the peripheral nerves in Landry–Guillain–Barré syndrome. The receptor (629 aa) is distinct from that for IL-12 and probably activates the JAK–STAT signalling pathway.
