The formal assessment of learners' work or performance which is carried out by teachers within the learners' institution, who are referred to for this purpose as internal assessors. It is used in courses which have some element of continuous assessment, and is normally subject to a process of moderation. If the assessment contributes towards a national or externally validated award, it will also normally be subjected to verification by the relevant awarding body. Proponents of externally set and marked examinations often claim that internal assessment is insufficiently robust and possibly unreliable; while its proponents argue that it can provide a more accurate evaluation of a candidate's abilities and achievement, measured over time and removed from the artificial pressures of the examination room.
