One of four pairs of abdominal muscles lying under the external obliques. They have their origins on the lumbodorsal fascia, iliac crest, and inguinal ligament; they have their insertions on the linea alba, pubic crest, and lowest three or four ribs. They function with the external obliques to flex and rotate the trunk, and compress the abdomen.
