A NASA spacecraft, formerly called International Sun–Earth Explorer-3 (ISEE-3), which became the first spacecraft to be sent to a comet. ISEE-3 was launched in 1978 August to study the solar wind. In 1983 December it was retargeted to Comet Giacobini–Zinner and renamed International Cometary Explorer. In 1985 September it passed through the tail of Comet Giacobini–Zinner, 7800 km from the nucleus. In 1986 March, ICE passed 28 million km from Halley's Comet.
