A major international programme of research that began in the early 1980s and was designed to describe and understand the interacting physical, chemical, and biological processes that regulate the Earth's environmental systems. It was established by the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU) in 1986, and its activities are focused on a series of core projects, which are the International Global Atmospheric Chemistry Project, Stratosphere–Troposphere Interactions and the Biosphere, the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study, the Global Ocean Euphotic Zone Study, Land–Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone, Biospheric Aspects of the Hydrological Cycle, Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystems, Past Global Changes, and Global Analysis, Interpretation and Modelling. Mission to Planet Earth is an important component of the IGBP.
