International Nomenclature of Disease

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

A systematic comprehensive taxonomy aimed at listing all the accepted names of all diseases, procedures, etc., compiled under the auspices of the Council for International Organizations of the Medical Sciences and the World Health Organization. The criteria for official names include specificity, absence of ambiguity, simplicity, and that the name be self-descriptive. The aim is to produce a master list of officially recommended names that all agree would comprise an official taxonomy. Unfortunately, budget cuts led to suspension of this WHO project.

Subjects: Public Health and Epidemiology.
