A project begun in 1982 to collect and analyse radiance measurements made by satellites, as part of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP). This data will be used primarily to increase knowledge of the effects of clouds on the radiation balance. It will also improve understanding about the global distribution of clouds, their properties, and variations.
Data is collected by weather satellites operated by several nations. Data collection began in July 1983 and the 20th year of collection was reached in 2003. The first ISCCP regional experiment (FIRE) was the Arctic cloud experiment (ACE) that began in April 1998 to study the impact of Arctic clouds on the radiation exchange between space and the Earth's surface and atmosphere, as well as the influence on surface characteristics on those clouds.
