The use of the Internet to send telephone calls, often at little or no charge. This is a promising technology which, however, is still in its infancy. It has huge potential since the Internet has a higher bandwidth than normal telephone lines and enables a much greater volume of calls to be placed. However, the quality of service experienced by current users of Internet telephony is much lower than that provided by telephone companies.
