Confinement of people in a camp or prison-like custodial institution, usually aliens in times of war and prisoners of war. Conditions in internment camps can be unhealthy. International agreements, not always respected, give the Red Cross and other neutral agencies rights of access and sometimes of intervention to ensure humane treatment of internees.
