This can cause fatal toxicity, or the floppy infant syndrome with poor muscle tone, respiratory insufficiency, etc. One mode of infection is ingestion of the C. botulinum spores in unpasteurized honey, which is sometimes given to infants or used to sweeten the soother (pacifier) intended to quiet the infant.
