Quick Reference

A type of painting featuring intimate domestic scenes, more or less Impressionist in technique, particularly associated with Bonnard and Vuillard, who practised it from the 1890s (this is when the term was first used). Whereas the Impressionists usually aimed at accurately reflecting the colours of the natural world, the Intimistes often exaggerated and distorted colour to express mood, conveying the warmth and comfort of an untroubled domestic life.
