Waiting. Term popularized by Iranian reformer Ali Shariati (d. 1977) in his 1971 lecture entitled “Waiting: The Religion of Refusal.” A play on the term al-muntazar, referring to the awaited imam and Mahdi of Shii Islam. For Shariati, waiting means saying no to the oppressive status quo and striving for a just society.
