A small muscle fibre lying inside a muscle spindle. The middle portion of the intrafusal fibre is non-contractile. When it is stretched, sensory nerve endings convey the information to the central nervous system. The ends of the intrafusal fibres can contract when stimulated by their motor neurones, the gamma motor neurones. See also stretch reflex.
