Either of two tiny clusters of nerve cell bodies on each side of the dorsal thalamus that receive inputs from the cerebral hemispheres, brainstem, cerebellum, and spinal cord and that project to the striatum, being involved in higher motor control. [From Latin intra within+lamina a plate or layer, so called because they are contained within the internal layers of white matter in the thalamus]
