An index used by M. Abercrombie and J. E. M. Heaysman to quantify the invasiveness of cells in vitro. The index is based on measurements on confronted explants of the putatively invasive cells and ‘normal’ embryonic chick heart fibroblasts growing in tissue culture: it is the ratio of the estimated and actual movement in the collision zone: a value of less than 1 indicates hindrance, which is interpreted as being due to contact inhibition of locomotion.
