The material used to surround the wax pattern of a restoration or prosthetic appliance prior to casting. Investment used for high-fusing alloys is bonded by a phosphate and a metallic oxide. Gypsum-bonded investment is used for gold alloy casting and some low-fusing cobalt-chromium alloys; this type of investment material is not generally used above 750°C (1382°F) as it breaks down.
